DAVE COFELL'S GALLERY

Paintings on Cork

In 1983 a friend who was moving out of his trailer gave me some cork panels that he was otherwise going to throw out. I took them and put them away for a few years, knowing that I would find a way to use them someday.
When I started doing larger paintings and realized that I wasn't very good at estimating how much paint to use, and just throwing things away goes against my grain, I thought they would be a good way to use up my excess. The cork really soaks up the paint and it takes several layers before it doesn't fade after a week or two.

(left) "Green Eyes" a simple title because couldn't think of anything else to call it.(right)"Blue Eyes" Same deal. And once I started calling them by these titles they just seemed to stick.
(left) "Wise Guys" refers to the three wise men in the Christmas story. (right)"Land" reminded me somewhat of a view of the ground from an airplane
(left) "King" seems to me to be somewhat of a reluctant ruler, and is that a cigarette dangling from his lips? (right) "Nessy" The reddish shape in the upper-left reminded me of a famous photo taken at Loch Ness.
(left) "Parthenon" refers to its temple-like qualities, and the colors convey somewhat the heat I felt when I visited the Acropolis in 1986. (right) "What Dave Feels Like When He Leaves John's at 3am" seems pretty self-explanitory to me. (The John Schwindel Collection)
(left) "yellow Halo" Looks to me like some saintly figure looking on and wondering what I'm going to do next. (right) "Bruce Plays The Guitar With A Big Tie" resembles my friend Bruce wailing on the guitar (The Bruce Walters/Ritalee Heurung Collection).
