DAVE COFELL'S GALLERY

Paintings

I didn't start using oil paint until 1988. A friend and fellow artist was struck and killed while riding a bicycle and it was after that that I really began. He was an amazing painter and an inspiration just to watch. When he died I decided to carry on a portion of his energy by painting.

I have been informed that my paintings are psychologically jarring, some of them anyway. I apologize if I knock someone off their track.

(left) "Harbor" This is my most recent painting (August, 2004). It is currently on display in my living room.
(left) "All Soul's Day" Clean my brushes sometimes produces better results than my main project. This one is currently hanging in my kitchen. (right)"Giraffes" One of several "Animal" pictures, when I feel I have enough of these I will give them their own room.
(left) "Paul Cezanne's Pointillist Nightmare" Using up leftover paint is where I really excel!. (right)"Last of the Dinosaurs" This one has hung over the crib of all 3 of my children, they now share my interest in paleontology.
(left) "Doofus" is one that I have been adding to for several years. (right) "Wildlife" Another "animal" painting, and, as with so many of my paintings, added to over a long period of time while using up extra paint.
(left) "We always seem to be looking the wrong way for the answers to our problems. (right)"Game" Another in my "games" series (see the Pastels and prints rooms) I really like this one, I have it about in the house, usually in the hallway.
(left) "Andrew is Dead" A reaction to the death of a friend. (See my Links page)(right) "Carnival" Inspired by a Guatemalan fiesta seen at night.
(right) "View from the temple of Poseidon" A tribute to one of the best sunsets I've ever seen. (left) "Sunrise" My idea of what a sunrise must look like.
(left) "Starry Night" A tribute(?) to Van Gogh (right) "Splatter" An odd little painting that seems to have a violent history.
(left) "Watcher" is a three-dimensional painting, the face bulges out almost an inch from the rest of it.(right) "Self portrait #2" is black and white painted over a canvas that was previously painted ochre.
(left) "Self portrait #1" my first attempt at a self portrait and one of my first paintings (right) "Self portrait #3" a recent use of excess paint.
(right) "Jim's new sweater" I dunno, I can't explain this one. (left) "Monica" A portrait of my wife a few years before we were married, it doesn't really look much like her but a mentor commented that it was the first painting I did that was really interesting..
(right) "Shoe" Actually this an interpretation of what I look like when I'm sleeping, but I just call it "shoe" (left) "Red Rider" 1988 was a very prolific year for me, and this is one of the paintings from that year that I have always liked.

About the Music

"No Bake"

This was named as it is because at the time I wrote it I was working my way through a batch of no-bake chocolate cookies from my brother John's recipe, or at least the recipe that he turned me onto. It is written in 9/8 time signature for solo piano in the key of Eb Major. I used Finale Notepad to write it in 2001
