DAVE COFELL'S GALLERY

CERAMICS!

I owe any craft that I have learned in ceramics to my sister Jeanne and especially to S.Dennis Frandrup osb. who taught me in the Art department at the College of St. Benedict. I've given away or sold most of my best ceramics, but I do have a fair number of them photographed on slides and prints. As time goes on I will rotate this collection or perhaps just add to it depending on how the download time works out.

My apologies for the poor quality of the scanning of some of these slides, I will try to update them soon!

(L&R) "Flame Tureen #1" my first attempt at this type of thing.. Jimmy!!
(Left) my second attempt. this one was featured in the local art publication "Lower Stumpf Lake Review". (Right) "Table" is a short (16") table that I have used as a nightstand among other things.
The tall black tureen is a nice tall but compact shape. (right) The black tea set was another from my black period.
(Left) A black "fluted" bowl reminiscent of some renaissance Italian bowls. (Right)A tureen with blue slip rings and a crackle glaze
(Left) "Helmet" one of two, this one resembling a winged "Viking" sort of helmet. (Right)A tureen with Ash from the Mt. St. Helen's eruption in 1985
(Left & Right) A couple of pitchers. The trick with these is to make a spout that pours with out dripping.
(Left) "Tripod" the decoration on the three legs are a hand, a snake and a fish. I don't remember why I used those particular images, they just happened that way probably.
(Right)This flameware teapot is supposed to handle high temperature better than normal stoneware, it is one of two I made in 1986 for use on a woodstove.
I made a large number of vases that were altered in shape, changing almost every aspect of some of them from the way they came off the potter's wheel. This led eventually to the tall vases that I enjoyed making so much.
(Left)Tall Porcelain Vase. I have always intended to make a top for this one, what I have now is a clock that sits in it and I have never been wholly satisfied with it. (Left) Tall Vase with incised slip and cool glaze. This one turned out really well. Dr. Wm. Ibes purchased it from my senior show.
(L & R) A highly altered vase. I did just about everything I could to this one, I joined, incised, pushed, pulled, stamped, etc... more of a sculpture than a vase.
(L & R)"The Village" is merely a vitrified sand castle, but it looks good in my Mom's garden..
(Left) I think this vase is one of the prettiest I've ever made.
(Right) "Satan & Friends" is sort of a group self-portait, some of the less-savory aspects of my personality.
