The ESSAY
for November, 2003

"Thanks"

Thanks seemed appropriate for the Thanksgiving season here in the US. So far nobody has had much to say about it but remember that you can submit an essay at any time.

Here is my contribution- The editor

Thanks

It has been my experience that people don’t say “Thank You” enough anymore- so much is given and taken without those two little words that really can mean a lot. The person behind the counter may or may not need to have the job that they do but they are still human and if they do their job adequately they deserve an acknowledgement of some sort.

I would like to live in a civil society and I believe that civility starts with me. If I am civil to others they are more likely to pass it on and eventually it will pay off.

I live in a country that is rich in natural resources, cultural variety, and brain power. There is beauty all around me, there is oxygen in the air. I have a little house and a little land and a little garden, a meal every night and a place to sleep. I can occasionally have a warm bath in clean water and then read on the couch until midnight. That’s alright with me and I am very grateful to so many people for being able to do what I do.

We have so much to be thankful for. It is true that there is a lot to angry, sorry and dismayed about, but there is a lot to be thankful for.

And I don’t want to get into a debate about the existence of God, but I am very grateful to, as it says in the Hindu Rig Veda, “that by which the whole world is pervaded.” One argument that I have heard in this debate is the logical one that if there is a God it probably isn’t a bad idea to be grateful to It. And if there isn’t a God you probably haven’t done yourself much harm by being grateful. I’m not talking about a specific religious system, they have been know to do plenty of harm. And perhaps this is just my way of admitting that there is something going on that I don’t understand but I like very much. What I’m trying to say is that it has been interesting so far and that I’m honored to have been/be a part of it.

One of the pages of this website is my “Thanks” page. It is where I acknowledge some of the people who make this whole thing possible or have helped me along the way here. Without these people and several which I am sure that I have neglected to acknowledge I wouldn’t have done many of the things that I have done, know what I know and been offered much more that I don’t know, and I certainly wouldn’t have this website. I’d especially like to thank all the fine people who have in this past year contacted me through this website and expressed their views about my work and/or have submitted an essay. You have all been very kind. This past year has been very challenging and I have learned much.

But you see, it is a good thing to do but I also get the feeling that once I get going I will not be able to stop...

So I’ll leave off here. Thanks for visiting DaveCofell.com.
